You Never Know What Will Come Walking Up Your Driveway

The guys were out digging potatoes again, when someone noticed something coming up the driveway. Andrew came running in to the house where I was working, asking for the camera. It was a pelican!

It looks like the poor thing can't fly, but instead took to walking.

Now, what to do with this bird? Most birds took off when the weather turned cold.

We'll see if we can figure out what to do with him.

WOW... Do you get pelicans around there in the summertime? I think he is lost. Whatever those boys try to talk you into.... DO NOT LET IT MOVE INTO YOUR BASEMENT WITH YOU!!!! :)

Marci, we do have pelicans here all summer -- some even nest on our lake. It's so neat to watch a group of them flying overhead, they are so graceful and their flight seems so effortless. And no, no one even mentioned having him stay in here! However, they did make a place for him in the barn! It's sad, because we know he won't make it since it's too cold and the lakes are freezing over. We have no idea what happened to him that he can't fly. There are no visible signs of injury, either. Tonight the coyotes were barking not too far away; I was thankful the boys gave him refuge in our barn for the night.

That is sad and hard to watch!

Good morning, Mrs. Bartlett,
How is Mr. Pelican doing today? We all laughed when we saw the pictures of a pelican in your yard! That's something that's never wandered down our driveway--yet.
Did you get a lot of snow yesterday? We had about 4 inches, so everything looks so clean and white. I'm so glad that most everything was in from the garden when it came... We still have to pick our popcorn and Lima beans once they dry down.
Well, have a lovely day! I'm sure you're still very busy with putting up vegetables too.

Hi Cora, the boys opened the doors to the barn, and the pelican walked away toward the lake. we don't know what happened to him after that. There was nothing we could do to help him out, other than give him a ride to Florida! Yes, we are still working on tomatoes, pumpkin, onions, etc. The potatoes are all dug, but we are now trying to figure out what to do with them for storage. Thanks for sending a note!
