Peter's Friends

The boys sent me a couple of photos to post. This is our son Peter with our dog, Samson. Peter tried very hard to make him "his dog," and I think he succeeded!

Here is another "friend" of Peters. Unfortunately, these salamanders abound up here in the fall. When they feel threatened, they wave their tail and give off a strange odor. You won't catch me holding onto one of those things!

GROSS!!!! How BIG is that thing? I am wondering if it is just how the picture was taken, but that salamander is HUGE!!! They don't come in the house do they? I thought Florida was bad for critters. =)

Leave it to a boy to want to catch one and hold it. Lynn, you and I both live in a man's world. We need to somehow strengthen our reserve.

Marci, those things are about 8 inches long, from tip of nose to end of tail. And yes, they are gross! Last Sept. when we were processing chickens I looked down and saw one just in front of my kitchen stove, waving its tail at me. No one else was in the house, so it was up to me to get rid of it before it crawled under the stove! I grabbed a newspaper and used that to throw the thing outside! I told the boys about it later, and one said they had seen one near the door and had just left it there. Somehow it came in when someone else did. I hope I never have that happen again!

And yes, we both live in a man's world;I wonder if Marlene Kimball would say the same thing!

(PS: Last winter Jim and the boys went to our old Norweigen cabin that is on our property to check out the crawlspace underneath. They cleaned out all the scat that they found, and in the buckets of warm sand they carried out those salamanders, which were hibernating down there. AND MY HUSBAND WANTS TO CONSIDER USING THAT AREA FOR A ROOT CELLAR!)

Thanks Lynn for great updates on the house and harvesting. Your stove must be getting a work out.

Where are you going to put all those canning containers. Apparantly you found some.

Lot of work but will be great this winter.

Are you going to freeze any ears of corn.

Wonder how many lizards you can get in a canning jar. Do you have a recipe for them. Just kidding, you know me.

Have fun.

Good Heavens!! That creature is gi-enormous!

Yes, Marlene would say the same.

Do they have a natural predator?

Herrick, I don't know about a natural predator, but the chickens sure love them! That is what the boys do with those things when they catch them -- yuck!
